Where to start? The original concept and reasons for change

My original idea for the Client Project was to shoot a second film in Reading, using 2 locations I visited.

The first was Davidson House - an office building which was very tall and square. The office I used in my previous film was another great office location, but very different to Davidson House. See attached picture of Davidson House Below:

The second location to be used extensively was the Water Treatment works at Thames Water, another great location which I had agreed night access to:

The film was to be about a faith healer - a seventh son of a seventh son, whose powers were questionable even to him. I went to see a play called Faith Healer for inspiration.

Once entering further research stages, I decided to completely change my project; I already had a short film for my portfolio which demonstrated aethetic qualities, and I decided to pursue a project which would allow me to acquire a different set of skills in the process.

The obvious choice was a documentary; a much more organic and reality orientated project. I was attracted to the aspect of working on a project which utilised many tools I was already familiar with, but not using the tools for fictional, narrative means.

I always strive for my work to be original, and different from others, but not so different that it would lose its general attraction by being too abstract, I would also need to choose a subject which I felt passionate about, and upon exploring further, would learn alot.Rory Gallagher matched all these criteria! An unsung hero who inspired many guitarists that are household names, Rory was such an important part of musical history yet is relatively unknown.

As I began to research Rory, I spoke to a work colleague, Phil who had seen Rory play many a time - he saw Rory play in Belfast: Rory was one of the only musicians who included Belfast in his tour at times when it was considered incredibly dangerous. Aspects such as this would be crucial to drawing a picture of the subect of my documentary, and I agreed to interview Phil at a later date.

I had another conversation regarding Rory with the office security guard covered local Blues Guitarist Larry Miller - Larry has played with Rory before and is also a big Rory fan. This would be another great aspect to capture in the documentary, as it would deliver a perspective that many individuals may not be able to.

I began to put plans into place to make a trip to Cork City - Rory's home town. There are plaques, pubs, restaurants and sculptures dedicated to the late guitarist. This with local public opinion would be a good area to focus on.

Client Project

This online journal relates to my Client Project for Nottingham Trent University, as I progress with the project, I will be documenting various aspects of it here.

My Client project is a documentary on the Blues Rock Guitarist Rory Gallagher. Rory was a musician with astonishing amounts of energy who inspired generations of guitarists. I plan to network with relevant people to produce a wide range of interview subjects. I'm hoping this will prove to be an interesting watch as many people may not be familiar with Rory!
